How Long Does the Journey Take?

Around 65 minutes in normal traffic. At peak times, allow up to 110 minutes.
That gap is wide, and it is the single thing that catches Leeds travellers out. The difference is not the distance. It is the M62.

The Route

Your driver takes the M62 westbound across the Pennines, then joins the M60 around Manchester, then the M56. Manchester Airport sits at Junction 5 of the M56, signposted from the moment you leave the motorway.

There is no faster alternative. Every road route from Leeds uses the same corridor, so the traffic on the day decides the journey time.

When the M62 Slows Down

The M62 carries constant roadworks and lane closures between Leeds and Manchester. Add commuter traffic and a 65 minute run becomes a 110 minute one.
Plan for the longer time if you travel during these windows:

Window What to expect
6am to 9am Up to 110 minutes
4pm to 7pm Up to 110 minutes
All other times Around 65 minutes

Outside those hours the road usually runs clear. Overnight and early Sunday journeys are the quickest of the week.

What Time to Leave Leeds

Manchester Airport asks passengers to arrive two hours before a short-haul flight and three hours before long-haul. Work backwards from there, then add your journey time.

Two worked examples:

Your flight Leave Leeds by
7am short-haul 3.45am
11am short-haul 6.45am

The second example looks early for a late morning flight. It is not. A 9am arrival at the airport means driving straight through the 6am to 9am peak, so the journey needs the full 110 minutes.
When you book, we set your pickup time using the same maths. If your flight is at 11am, we will not collect you at 8am.

Coming Back the Other Way

The same peaks apply in reverse. A 5pm landing at Manchester puts you on the M62 in the evening rush.
We track your flight and set off based on when you actually land, not when you were scheduled to. Full details are in the returning from Manchester Airport section below.

Taxi, Train or Coach from Leeds?

Three ways to reach Manchester Airport from Leeds. Each wins in different circumstances.
Here is the honest comparison, including the times we lose.

Option Cost Door-to-door time
Fastlane taxi £105 fixed, any group size About 65 minutes
TransPennine train £15 advance, £26 to £45 on the day, per person About 2 hours 15 minutes
National Express or FlixBus £8 to £35 per person About 2 hours 30 minutes

The Train Is Cheaper for One Person

Book a TransPennine Express advance single and you will pay around £15. Our saloon is £105. For a solo traveller with hand luggage, the train wins on price and it is not close.
TransPennine runs direct from Leeds to Manchester Airport, roughly hourly, stopping at Huddersfield and Manchester Piccadilly. The train pulls in at the airport’s own station, a covered walk from the terminals.
If you are travelling alone, at a reasonable hour, with a cabin bag, book the train. We would rather tell you that than take a booking you regret.

Where the Train Time Actually Goes

The 1 hour 23 minute journey time is station to station. Your journey is not.
From a Leeds address you need to reach the station first. From Headingley, Roundhay or Horsforth that is 15 to 20 minutes by road, with luggage, at your own cost. Then you wait for the service. Then you travel. Then you walk from the airport station to your terminal.
Add it up and the real figure is closer to 2 hours 15 minutes. Ours is 65 minutes, from your front door.

The Group Maths

This is where it turns. Four people booking advance train tickets pay around £60, plus a local taxi to Leeds station with four sets of cases. Call it £80 in total.
Our saloon carries four passengers for £105. That is £26.25 each, door to door, one vehicle, no changes.
The train is still cheaper on paper. It is not cheaper on effort, and the gap is roughly £25 across the whole group.
Book on the day rather than in advance and the picture reverses. Walk-up TransPennine fares run £26 to £45 each. Four passengers at £30 is £120, which is more than our fixed £105 for the same four people.
For six or eight travellers, our MPV6 and MPV8 fares settle it outright.

When the Coach Makes Sense

National Express and FlixBus both run direct from Leeds City Bus and Coach Station. Fares start around £8, which is the cheapest way to travel.
The trade is time. Allow 1 hour 50 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes on the road, before you add getting to the coach station. For an early flight, that is a very long night.

Choose the Taxi When

  • You are travelling as a group of three or more
  • You have hold luggage, a pushchair or sports kit
  • Your flight departs or lands outside train hours
  • You are landing at Manchester with bags at the end of a long day
  • The rail network is disrupted, which the M62 route is not affected by
  • Your Leeds address is nowhere near the station

Check your own postcode and group size with our Manchester Airport fare calculator before you decide.

Returning from Manchester Airport to Leeds

Your driver is already at the airport before you land.
We track your flight from take-off. If you are delayed, held on the taxiway or diverted, the pickup time moves with you. The fare does not change.

Your 45 Minutes Free Waiting

Free waiting starts when your wheels touch down, not when you were scheduled to land.
That covers passport control, the baggage belt and the walk out. Most passengers clear in well under 45 minutes. If you are held longer, call the number on your confirmation and we will sort it.

Where Your Driver Meets You

Manchester Airport has two passenger terminals. Almost every airline uses Terminal 2. Ryanair uses Terminal 3.

Terminal Where we collect you
Terminal 2 Express Pick Up, ground floor of T2 West Multi-Storey, signposted P3. Sat nav M90 5PR
Terminal 3 T3 Multi Storey, signposted P14, directly in front of the terminal building

Both are a short covered walk from arrivals.

How the Pickup Works

Collect your bags first. Then message your driver on WhatsApp.
Only then does the driver enter the car park. They send you a bay number. Walk to that bay.
Look for the bay, not for a person. Finding a numbered space is faster than scanning faces in a busy multi-storey.

Why We Wait Off-Airport

Manchester Airport’s Express Pick Up zones charge from the moment a number plate is scanned, and there is a 15 minute maximum stay. Overstay it and a £60 charge applies.
Two other charges catch drivers out. Collecting from the drop-off forecourt instead of the pick-up zone triggers £100. And the car parks are barrierless with no pay machines on site, so payment is made online by midnight the following day. Miss that and a £100 Parking Charge Notice follows, reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days.
Our drivers do not sit in the pick-up zone burning that 15 minute clock. They wait in a free holding area about five minutes away and come in when you are ready.
You never see any of these charges. They are paid from our account and they are inside your £105.
Full charge detail is on our Manchester Airport taxi page.

Landing Late

The M62 is quiet after 8pm, so a late arrival is often the fastest run of the day.
There is no night surcharge. A 2am landing costs the same £105 as a 2pm one.

Why Fly from Manchester and Not Leeds Bradford?

Leeds Bradford is closer. Manchester flies where you are going.
Manchester handles the large majority of the north’s international routes, including almost all long-haul. Leeds Bradford serves a smaller network built around European leisure destinations and domestic links.
If you are flying to North America, the Gulf, Asia or most of the Caribbean, Manchester is usually the only realistic departure point in the north. That is why this route exists.
Fastlane covers transfers to Manchester Airport. We do not run transfers to Leeds Bradford.

Where We Pick Up Across Leeds

Every Leeds address is the same fixed fare. £105 in a saloon whether you are in the city centre or out past the ring road. We collect from all LS postcodes, including:

  • Leeds city centre and the LS1 and LS2 business district
  • Headingley, Hyde Park and Woodhouse
  • Roundhay, Chapel Allerton and Meanwood
  • Horsforth, Adel and Cookridge
  • Morley, Pudsey and Farsley
  • Garforth, Crossgates and Whinmoor
  • Wetherby, Otley and Guiseley

Hotel, hospital and university pickups are routine. Common ones include Leeds station, Leeds General Infirmary, St James’s, the University of Leeds and Leeds Beckett.

Groups, Families and Luggage

Pick the vehicle by luggage, not just by headcount. Four adults with four large cases will not fit comfortably in a saloon.

Group size Best fit
1 to 3 with hold bags Saloon, £105
4 with hand luggage Saloon, £105
1 to 3 wanting more space Business Class, £140
4 to 6 MPV6, £140
7 to 8 MPV8, £156

At six passengers the MPV6 works out at £23.33 each. At eight, the MPV8 is £19.50 each. Both undercut a walk-up train ticket, door to door, with your luggage in the boot.

Travelling with Children

Child seats and boosters are free. There is no charge per child.
Tell us each child’s age when you book so the right seat is fitted before the driver leaves.
Licensed taxis and private hire vehicles hold a legal exemption from child seat rules, which surprises most parents. We fit seats anyway. Our guide to child car seats in taxis explains where the law stands.

Booking and Cancelling

Book online in about two minutes, or call 0161 660 9647.
You get the driver’s name and vehicle registration the day before. You can cancel free up to 3 hours before pickup.

Leeds to Manchester Airport Taxi FAQs

How long does the journey take?

About 65 minutes in normal traffic. Allow up to 110 minutes between 6am and 9am, and again between 4pm and 7pm, when the M62 is busiest.

Is there a direct train from Leeds to Manchester Airport?

Yes. TransPennine Express runs direct, roughly hourly, calling at Huddersfield and Manchester Piccadilly. Station to station takes about 1 hour 23 minutes. Check the live timetable before you travel.

Is the train or a taxi cheaper?

The train, if you are travelling alone and book in advance. An advance single is around £15 against our £105.

Which terminal do I need at Manchester Airport?

Almost every airline uses Terminal 2. Ryanair uses Terminal 3. Check your boarding pass, then tell us at booking so your driver waits at the right pick-up point.

Do you cover Leeds Bradford Airport?

No. Fastlane runs transfers to Manchester Airport and other UK airports, but not to Leeds Bradford.
